[:1]How long do you think it'll be until AIs no longer need map markers to function properly? Where they can 'recognize' terrain types and where the enemy is and work just from that?|||probably about the time someone makes an AI that looks at a map, and makes it's own markers.
that is, to some extent, what people do.|||In Quake 3 FPS game, the AI's were able to navigate the maps without markers, but not very well, in Unreal Tournament, which has AI markers, the AI makes good decisions based on those markers, so for SupCom, I reckon that if an AI gets made (Sorian does work), it will work better having markers to navigate with.|||Grogyan|||Its really not about if it can be done, but the most efficient way it can be done, so if the AI has to look at the whole map each time, that is a large CPU and memory overhead that would have cause undesirable effects.
Also having AI markers means that an AI (not game specific) will make better decisions rather than arbitrary plonk a major base inside the radius of attack of the opponent or at the far side of the map where no one, even the AI can attack from.|||There were games that didn't need markers, and yes they were RTS. The part about placing AI markers, came when the dots that make up units and maps. Became so small that it was no longer able to support that style of game play.
Games that were able to play without markers were Earth 2150 and many games that came after it. But after Earth 2160 came out, it had way better graphics, and the units were not good at path finding anymore.
